چکیده

Occupational radiation exposure from the space environment may increase cancer morbidity or mortality risk in astronauts. This risk may be influenced by other space fl ight factors including microgravity and e nvironmental contaminants. A Mars mission will not be fe asible unless improved shielding is developed or transit time is decreased. – Human Research Program Requirements Document, HRP-47052, Rev. C, dated Ja n 2009.

Radiation-induced Non-targeted Effect and Carcinogenesis; Implications in Clinical Radiotherapy

Bystander or non-targeted effect is known to be an interesting phenomenon in radiobiology. The genetic consequences of bystander effect on non-irradiated cells have shown that this phenomenon can be considered as one of the most important factors involved in secondary cancer after exposure to ionizing radiation. Every year, millions of people around the world undergo radiotherapy in order to cu...

Estimation of Secondary Skin Cancer Risk Due To Electron Contamination in 18-MV LINAC-Based Prostate Radiotherapy

Introduction Accurate estimation of the skin-absorbed dose in external radiation therapy is essential to estimating the probability of secondary carcinogenesis induction Materials and Methods Electron contamination in prostate radiotherapy was investigated using the Monte Carlo (MC) code calculation. In addition, field size dependence of the skin dose was assessed. Excess cancer risk induced by...

Cancer risk models for ionizing radiation.

Risk estimation in radiation carcinogenesis depends primarily on epidemiological data and hazard rate models. The A-bomb survivors follow-up provides information on the complexity of this process. Several hazard rate models are briefly discussed and illustrated using the A-bomb experience.

Molecular mechanisms of radiation carcinogenesis and the linear, non-threshold dose response model of radiation risk estimation.

Recent research in molecular radiation carcinogenesis is reviewed with the specific aim of exploring the implications this research may have on the dose response relationship of radiation-induced cancer at low doses and low dose rates. It is concluded that the linear non-threshold dose response hypothesis may be used in radiation protection planning as a simple, convenient method to optimize pr...
